America the beautiful as we mentioned in our post America The Beautiful - A Beautiful Non-Meeting - Made From RI, was a song that sprang from a trip up a mountain and a non-meeting.
It is undeniable that the words cause ample imagery to spring to mind. What is amazing is how these words marry a moment in a professor's experience to history. There is a synthesis of knowledge of the past with personal experience on put to paper. The illustration of Katherine Lee Bates' brilliant mind is astounding.
The concept of "Purple Mountains Majesty" is obvious. Anyone who has climbed mountains in the west understands. The concept of "Sea To Shining Sea" is a reference to the charters and treaties of early North America. Those documents referenced "... from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean." Imagine the mind that pulled that reference out at a particular moment of writing this lyric.
