Why are Rhode Islanders so enamored with anchors? The simple, simplistic, answer is that we are from the Ocean State. However, no pun intended, the answers are deeper than this. The anchor is symbolic. 

Anchors represent strong, deep, resistant and dependable bonds. Anchors represent love and a firm life together. Anchors symbolize stability. Anchors possess spiritual meaning; a metaphor for salvation. And most representative of all to a Rhode Islander, Anchors symbolize Hope; support against the complications that life presents and consideration of things greater than ourselves.
