From Another Time: The Newport - Jamestown Chart Tile Trivet
Posted by Keith R Wahl, Made From RI on Apr 21st 2022
There was a time when Narragansett Bay had fewer bridges. Ferries carried us across Narragansett Bay to the Newport area. Goat Island was industrial in nature. This was the passage of great Naval ships to Newport and Quonset Point.
The bridge came. Newport Harbor, already a yacht destination, became more so. Goat Island installed a gas dock and families could take boating day trips all the way from Warwick! The large mooring buoys between T-Wharf (Prudence Island) and Gould Island disappeared. The Jamestown to Newport ferry became a restaurant in Maine.
There are those of us who still remember the classic view of Narragansett Bay. The time when there was no bridge between Jamestown and Newport. While we love the bridge that brings us to the "City by the Sea", we still remember the days of sailing unencumbered. Others are curious of what the bay looked like. We have the classic chart view of Narragansett Bay at Made From RI in the Newport - Jamestown Chart Tile Trivet. Find this historic view here: Newport - Jamestown Chart Tile Trivet - Made From RI
