A Heritage of Place, On Your Table

The Rhode Island Story Told Through Stone Coasters
There’s a particular kind of Rhode Island storytelling that doesn’t need many words. Sometimes it’s a shoreline path, a lighthouse in fog, a gull with an attitude, or a fence holding back the winter wind. Sometimes it’s simply the way light falls on water. And sometimes … unexpectedly … it’s a coaster.
At Made From RI, our tumbled‑stone coasters have become small, durable vessels of local memory. Each one carries an image captured by our in‑house photographer, Keith R Wahl, whose lens has spent decades listening to the coastline, the villages, and the quiet corners of the state. These aren’t just table pieces; they’re fragments of Rhode Island’s living heritage, set into marble and backed with cork so they can sit comfortably in the homes of those who love this place.
Below is a walk through the collection … eight scenes, each a Rhode Island moment preserved.
Walking at Black Point
Black Point in Narragansett is one of those places where the land feels ancient … rocky ledges, wind‑shaped paths, and the steady pulse of the Atlantic. The coaster captures the simple act of walking the trail, the kind of everyday pilgrimage locals know by heart. It’s a reminder that heritage isn’t always grand; sometimes it’s the quiet rhythm of boots on stone.
Plum Beach Lighthouse
A sentinel in the bay, Plum Beach Lighthouse stands with a kind of stubborn grace. The coaster’s image holds that familiar silhouette … weathered, steadfast, and unmistakably Rhode Island. For many, it’s the first landmark seen when crossing the bridge home.
Painted Lady on Daisies
Not all Rhode Island stories are maritime. Some are delicate, fleeting. The Painted Lady butterfly resting on daisies brings a softer note to the collection … a reminder that our heritage includes meadows, gardens, and the small, bright lives that move through them.
Impatient Gull on Spile, Wickford
Every Rhode Islander knows this gull. The one who believes the dock belongs to him. The one who watches you with mild judgment as you unwrap your lunch. Captured in Wickford, this coaster is pure local character … salt, humor, and a bit of attitude.
Fencing at the Beach
Snow fencing along Narragansett Beach is a winter ritual. It marks the season, shapes the dunes, and stands as a quiet symbol of coastal resilience. The image on this coaster feels like a postcard from the off‑season—a time locals secretly love.
Castle Hill from the South
Castle Hill Lighthouse is one of the state’s most photographed icons, but this southern perspective gives it a fresh, almost contemplative presence. The coaster holds that sense of arrival—the way the lighthouse greets sailors, wanderers, and sunset‑seekers alike.
Castle Hill Classic Boats
Here, the lighthouse shares the frame with classic wooden boats, tying together two strands of Rhode Island’s maritime heritage: craftsmanship and navigation. It’s a scene that feels timeless, as if it could have been captured yesterday or a century ago.
Continued Foggy Summer Sailing
Fog is its own season in Rhode Island. This coaster captures that soft, drifting world where sails appear and disappear like memories. Beavertail Lighthouse sits in the distance, a faint anchor in the mist. It’s a piece for anyone who knows the quiet magic of a fog‑bound morning.
The Story These Coasters Carry
Each coaster is printed on 4‑inch tumbled marble, giving it the weight and texture of something meant to last. They’re functional, yes … hot or cold, year‑round … but they’re also conversation pieces, memory keepers, and small works of regional art.
More importantly, they’re part of a larger mission: to preserve Rhode Island’s heritage through images, stories, and everyday objects. To make the small state feel big with meaning.
About Made From RI and Made From RI Gallery
Made From RI and Made From RI Gallery work together to preserve, promote, and celebrate the creative life of Rhode Island.
Made From RI highlights the makers, materials, and small businesses that give our state its character, from heritage crafts and artisan goods to locally produced gifts that carry the imprint of Rhode Island hands. Every item we feature supports the people who keep our regional craft traditions alive.
Made From RI Gallery extends that mission into the documentary and artistic realm. Through photography, photopoetic field notes, and regional storytelling, the Gallery serves as a living record of Rhode Island’s landscapes, working waterfronts, seasonal rhythms, and cultural lineage. It is a place where image, verse, and witness come together to honor the truth of this place.
Together, the shop and the gallery form a single, steady purpose: to uplift Rhode Island makers, to document the heritage around us, and to leave a trustworthy record for the generations who will follow.
